You have devices from several manufacturers and want to manage them and their automations in one place. Home Assistant lets you connect compatible services in a single dashboard. In this guide, we'll show you how to set up Home Assistant on Saplo, complete the initial setup, and test a simple automation without connecting any hardware.
When Home Assistant on Saplo Makes Sense
Installing it on Saplo will work for integrations that use the internet and as an environment for learning automation. The panel runs on a server in a data center and is available over HTTPS. However, compatibility with a specific device depends on its integration, communication method, and the manufacturer's requirements.
Box does not automatically have access to your home network. Entering a device's private IP address, for example 192.168.1.20, will not ensure a connection from the Saplo server. Local devices require separately configured connectivity, such as a VPN tunnel with appropriate routes and access rules. Installing Home Assistant alone does not create such a tunnel. Automatic discovery via mDNS or SSDP will not start working just because you connect the VPN networks.
The hosting environment does not provide USB access, so you cannot directly connect a home Zigbee or Z-Wave coordinator to it. If your system relies on local sensors and control that work without internet access, consider keeping the automation hub at home. With a remote installation, losing your home internet connection cuts communication with the devices, even if the panel on Saplo itself keeps working.
Home Assistant requirements and hosting on Saplo
The cheapest plan that meets the recipe's minimum requirements is Box M for $69 per year. The recipe requires 2048 MB of RAM and 10 GB of disk space. If other applications are already running on your Box, check the available resources before installing. The growing history of measurements and each additional integration increase memory and disk usage.
Make sure you have an active Box, an application name, and the address where the application will be available. You do not need to create a separate database or manually install Docker. You can find the service details on the Home Assistant on Saplo page.
Saplo runs Home Assistant in the official container image. This is a Home Assistant Container installation, without the Supervisor or the add-on store found in Home Assistant OS. Integrations added in the Home Assistant settings are a different feature from applications managed by the Supervisor. The differences are described in the official Container installation documentation.
Step-by-step installation
- Log in to the Saplo panel and open the app catalog.
- Search for Home Assistant and start adding the application.
- Give it a name, for example
my-smart-home, and choose a Box with the appropriate resources. - Choose an available application address. You can start with the subdomain
*.saploapp.pl. - Confirm the installation and wait for it to finish in the panel. The time depends, among other things, on downloading the image and the server load.
- Open the exact HTTPS address shown next to the application. Saplo prepares the domain and SSL certificate during startup.
- Go straight to the first-run wizard and create an owner account.
Use the domain visible in the panel, without adding the 8123 port. The homeassistant.local address, commonly found in home installation guides, is not the address of your application on Saplo.
First login and home settings
In the new installation wizard, enter a username and a strong, unique password. You create the Home Assistant owner account yourself, and it is separate from your Saplo panel account. Save your credentials in a password manager and do not leave the unfinished wizard accessible at a public address.
Set your home location, then check the time zone Europe/Warsaw and the units. Specify the location of the devices you want to control, not the data center. This affects sunrise and sunset times. Choose your data sharing settings and complete the configuration. The wizard is described in the first startup documentation.
Your first integration without additional hardware
To start, add Workday, the business-day integration. It lets you test integration handling without a provider account and without connecting to your home network.
- Open Settings > Devices & services.
- Select Add Integration and search
Workday. - Set Poland as the country and enter a name, for example, "Business day".
- Check the selected days of the week and holiday settings. Leave the day offset set to zero if you want to check the current day.
- Finish the configuration, open the added integration and check its entity status.
An entity represents a specific reading or function, in this case, information about the business day. You can find instructions for adding Workday in the official Home Assistant integration guide. Add further integrations one at a time and check their documentation before entering login credentials.
Your first automation and a quick test
Prepare a test that displays a notification in Home Assistant at a selected time. It does not require a phone, lamp or sensor.
- Open Settings > Automations & Scenes, add an automation and select the option to create an empty rule.
- Add a time trigger, setting the time to a few minutes later than the current time in the configured time zone.
- For the test, leave the conditions section empty.
- Add the
persistent_notification.createaction. Set the title to “Test Saplo” and the message to “Automation works”. - Save the rule as “Notification test” and make sure it is enabled.
- Wait until the selected time. Check the notification in the Home Assistant interface and review the automation's execution trace.
- After the test succeeds, disable or delete the test rule so that it does not run every day.
The editor is described in the automation documentation, and you can find the action fields in the Persistent Notification documentation. This is an in-dashboard notification, not a push notification on your phone.
Running the action manually helps you check its configuration, but it does not confirm that the time trigger works. Therefore, also wait for the scheduled execution. Then log out, log back in and check whether the integration and saved rule are still visible.
What to check when something isn't working
The site doesn't open after installation. Check the application status in the Saplo panel and the full HTTPS address. If you see an error, give Saplo support the application name, time of the attempt, and error message. Do not remove an installation that already contains configuration just to try again.
Home Assistant cannot find devices at home. With this setup, this is expected. Check whether the selected integration uses the manufacturer's cloud or requires a direct connection to the device. For a local connection, you need an available network route and an integration that supports this mode. Do not expose the device panel to the internet as a workaround.
The automation doesn't run on time. Check the time zone, whether the rule is enabled, and the scheduled time. Open the execution trace to see whether the rule was triggered and which step it stopped at.
There is no add-on store. This is a feature of the Container installation. Guides that require Supervisor and Home Assistant OS add-ons do not directly apply to this installation.
Backups and further expansion
Box M does not include backups as part of the plan. Make sure you back up your Home Assistant data and configuration outside Box, especially before an update or a major change. Saving automations or having a persistent configuration directory does not replace a backup. Check that you can restore the backup before relying on the installation to manage your home on a daily basis.
After the first successful test, add one integration at a time and monitor resource usage. Launching the panel does not yet mean that all devices are reachable. Check every connection and every automation separately.
If Home Assistant is to reach devices in your home without exposing them to the internet, a private VPN will come in handy. We explained how to set up Headscale, your own Tailscale server on Saplo.
To get started, choose Home Assistant on Saplo on Box M for $69 per year. Go through the wizard, add Workday and run a test notification. Then choose integrations based on your devices and how you connect to your home.
